Alicia Kearns has been elected as the new Member of Parliament for the Rutland and Melton constituency in the first December election held in over one hundred years.
The win makes her only the third person to represent Rutland and Melton since 1983 and the first ever woman to successfully win the seat.
The results of the election were as follows;
Turn out - 70.4% and a majority of 26,924
Alicia Kearns, Conservative - 36,507
Marietta King, UKIP - 917
Alastair McQuillan, Green - 2,875
Andy Thomas, Labour - 9,583
Anthony Watchorn, Independent - 458
Carol Weaver, Liberal Democrat - 7,970
Following the announcement of the result Alicia thanked the Returning Officer and his staff, volunteers and the Police for ensuring the smooth running of the election. She went on to thank her opponents, paying tribute to Anthony Watchorn, the Independent candidate, who sadly passed away during the course of the election campaign.
Alicia said;
“Thank you to the residents of Rutland and Melton for putting your trust in me. It is an absolute honour to have been elected as your MP and I promise I will serve you all diligently and passionately. Rutland and Melton is a singularly special place, alive with community spirit and friendliness and it has been wonderful making it my home.”
Alicia's priorities will be to get Brexit done, end rural disadvantage, support our farmers, and protect our rural way of life whilst improving our roads and local services.
