Alicia Kearns MP is asking residents to sign her petition calling for the Labour Government to drop its review into plans to build two new hospitals in Leicester.
Funding was announced by the Conservative Government in May 2023 for a new hospital at the Leicester Royal Infirmary for women's and ICU services, a midwifery-led unit at Leicester General Hospital and a new hospital at the Glenfield for elective inpatients, theatres, outpatients and day cases.
Although works were confirmed and due to begin in Summer 2025, on 20th September the new Health Secretary wrote to MPs and confirmed the plans for two new hospitals in Leicester would be subject to review. A date for when the review would be completed has not been set.
Plans for the overhaul of healthcare infrastructure at University Hospitals Leicester also confirmed the Department for Health and Social Care would support the Trust with plans for a new multi-storey car park and a six-storey extension at LRI to re-provide an immunology lab, a pharmacy expansion and clinical genetics.
These changes have been called for over many years, and are much needed by staff and patients.
Together with Leicestershire MPs, Alicia Kearns is calling on the new Government to not scrap the funding for two new Hospitals, a midwifery-led unit and multi-storey car park in Leicester. Alicia’s petition can be signed here.
Alicia Kearns, Member of Parliament for Rutland and Stamford, said:
“Putting plans for two new hospitals at risk not only jeopardises patient care, but also the quality of work environment for our hard-working nurses, doctors and healthcare professionals.
“New healthcare infrastructure in Leicester will significantly ease pressures on our local health services, and reduce our waiting times.
“I’d encourage you all to sign my petition to strengthen our calls to the Health Secretary to reconsider this review, and honour the Conservative Government’s commitment to invest in our healthcare.”
