During today's Opposition Day Debate, Alicia Kearns MP called on the Government to drop the decision to impose VAT and business rates on independent school fees.
During her speech, Alicia highlighted the damage this policy will cause to the prospects of children in both state and independent schooling, and in particular the impact it will have on rural communities and economies. There are 10 independent schools across 11 sites in Rutland and Stamford.
Alicia requested the Government consider four key changes if it is to go ahead with the introduction of this policy. Alicia urged the Government to:
Delay its implementation until at least the end of the school year to ensure children are not forced to move midway through their studies.
Exempt those pupils in year ten to year thirteen, so they can take their exams without the added pressure of a school move, or having to leave their school with no alternative.
Help Local Authorities to rapidly boost ECHR assessments for SEND pupils and exempt any pupil awaiting assessment from the additional costs.
Undertake a regional assessment of available sate school places and exempt pupils who live in areas with no or low availability such as Rutland.
Alicia Kearns, Member of Parliament for Rutland and Stamford, said:
“Labour’s decision to impose VAT and business rates on independent schools is cruel, vindictive and will hurt those who put so much on the line for their children to attend the school right for them.
“Not only will it risk thousands of jobs in our communities, but it will also harm our local economy, and significantly impact those with SEND, military families and our comprehensives who are receiving no support for the increased number of students they will receive.
“An independent report commissioned by the Independent Schools Council estimated over 17% of pupils would leave within five years of VAT being added to fees, meaning this policy would cost the exchequer, not raise revenue.
“I will continue to do all I can to raise my voice against this dogma-driven policy.”
