In a Westminster Hall Debate on improving driver safety, Alicia Kearns MP raised the tragic case of the constituent Emily Challen who was killed in a car accident on the A1.
Alicia Kearns, MP for Rutland and Melton said:
"Emily Challen was devastatingly killed in a car accident on the A1 when the vehicle she was travelling in crashed into the back of a HGV. Her friend driving had only had her licence for 8 months, but was driving three passengers.
Today I called upon the Minister to introduce graduated driving licences, meaning that young people are not allowed to carry passengers for 6 months to 1 year after they pass their driving test. I hope this will ensure that tragedies like Emily’s are prevented."
