Rutland and Melton MP, Alicia Kearns, has launched her ‘Unsung Heroes’ campaign to recognise the fantastic ways local businesses and individuals are contributing to the national fight against Coronavirus.
Each week, Alicia will celebrate two winners, raising local awareness about available support and bolstering community spirit amidst the outbreak. All those recognised will receive a certificate of recognition and be invited to a celebratory event once the pandemic is over as a small way to say thank you.
The first organisations to be recognised as heroes is Rutland Plastics, who have adapted their plastic injection moulding firm to produce medical equipment, which will be used at the ExCel Nightingale Ward Hospital in London, and Oakham School’s Design and Technology Department, which has been creating face shields for frontline staff.

“I am immensely pleased to be launching this campaign to highlight our outstanding community spirit, which is one of the many reasons I am so proud to be Rutland and Melton’s Member of Parliament.
“In such an uncertain time, it is truly uplifting to be reminded of the unwavering strength of our communities and the crucial role we all play in healing our country from Coronavirus. These individuals and companies are true heroes whose work is saving lives.
“Rutland Plastics are a great example of this, and their ongoing work is literally saving lives. To everyone who works there; you are a credit to your families, our community and our country.
“An enormous thank you to this week’s Heroes: teachers of Design and Technology Kelly Gibbons, Thomas Banham, Chris Edwards, Kevin Townsley and Head of Design and Technology Tim Weston at Oakham School who have already created 150 face shields for NHS staff at Peterborough Hospital. I simply cannot thank you enough for helping keep our NHS staff safe.”
Oakham School is looking for donations of PVC or PET rolls of clear plastic that can be used as the shield - please contact Alicia directly if you can donate.
Alicia Kearns MP is encouraging Rutland and Melton residents to email her if they know of a person or organisation working to help the community who deserves recognition and continues to focus on supporting constituents throughout the outbreak.
