Sheffield Hallam University has recently published a new report into Uyghur forced labour in solar supply chains: ‘Over-Exposed’.
The report dedicates five pages to Canadian Solar, the primary developer behind the proposed Mallard Pass Solar Plant, concluding that the company has high level of exposure to Uyghur forced labour and human rights abuses.
Following the publication of Sheffield Hallam’s report, Alicia wrote to the Energy Secretary and Minister of State in the Foreign Office asking for them to sanction Canadian Solar in light of this new evidence.
Alicia Kearns, Member of Parliament for Rutland and Melton, said:
“Sheffield Hallam’s report reveals yet again the horrifying extent of Uyghur forced labour in Canadian Solar’s supply chains. I have consistently called on the Government to sanction Canadian Solar and create stricter regulations against solar companies engaged in or benefitting from forced labour.
“As we progress through the Planning Inspectorate’s Examination of Mallard Pass, we are approaching a crucial stage when the Secretary of State for Energy will decide whether to approve the application.
“I need your help now more than ever to represent our collective and justified opposition. I am asking everyone opposed to Mallard Pass to write me a letter explaining why, and to also sign my Parliamentary Petition, which I will personally deliver to the Secretary of State for Energy. We can go green without contributing to the enslavement and genocide of the Uyghurs.”
