This Saturday is Mr Dennis Kirk from Plungar’s 100th birthday, and his Member of Parliament Alicia Kearns has welcomed the opportunity to celebrate his outstanding contribution to his community during the Second World War and beyond.
In 1943, Mr Kirk was on air warden duty when a Lancaster bomber returning from France came down near Plungar and he rushed to help the only survivor, saving his life. Some 69 years later, aged 92, he and his wife organised a memorial service for the relatives of all who died in the air crash and the one survivor where a memorial stone was unveiled.
Mr and Mrs Kirks’ commitment to the community had also seen them take over the care of St Helen’s Church, Plungar, in their retirement.
Rutland and Melton’s MP, Alicia Kearns, said:
“Enormous congratulations to Mr Kirk on reaching this remarkable milestone. I would like to express my immense gratitude to him for ten decades where it is quite clear that he has exhibited an absolute sense of civic spirit, community mindedness and kindness.
“I very much look forward to meeting Mr Kirk when our country has healed to celebrate his birthday and century of contributions to our country.”
Alicia Kearns MP is encouraging residents to email her warm wishes to be passed onto Mr Kirk on this landmark occasion.
