Alicia Kearns MP today welcomed a historic £3.7 billion further investment in hospitals in the UK, building on the £2.8 billion committed last year. This represents the largest building scheme in a generation, and will ensure that 40 new hospitals can be built by 2030.
This £6.5 billion includes funding for a rebuild of the Leicester Royal Infirmary, and further upgrades to Leicester General Hospital. This comes alongside the Building Better Hospital for the Future Consultation, led by the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Clinical Commissioning Groups, which will deliver upgrades of £450 million across Leicestershire. In the area, but not in the CCG, the Kettering General Hospital will also be getting a rebuild, helping those in Rutland and Market Harborough in particular access better care.
Alicia Kearns MP said:
“It is so heartening to see the commitment the CCG and central government have to hospital services in Leicestershire. This Conservative Government is making historic investments in every part of the country, and this means that constituents and neighbourhoods will have access to better services than ever before. However, as part of these changes in Leicestershire, I would like to see more detail about the future sustainability of Melton Mowbray Hospital as well as the future of community health services and Rutland Memorial in Rutland. I have written today to the CCG on these matters, and I look forward to future conversations to secure the best possible local services in Rutland and Melton. During the consultation on maternity services at St Mary’s Birth Centre I will be making sure Meltonians get their voices heard.”
