The Water Minister has announced that Sykes Lane Bathing Beach and Whitwell Creek at Rutland Water have been officially designated as bathing water sites.
Following a national consultation their bathing water status has now been approved, meaning that the Environment Agency will regularly test the site for water quality and also assess what further action is needed to improve the water quality at these sites.
Monitoring is carried out where the greatest number of bathers go into the water, allowing the Environment Agency to assess whether action is needed to cut pollution levels, and then work with local communities, farmers and water companies to improve the water quality and protect the health of bathers.
Alicia Kearns, MP for Rutland and Melton said:
"This is fantastic news for Rutland Water where so many of us love to swim and enjoy wonderful water-based sports. Thank you to everyone in our communities who took the time to respond to this consultation - hopefully with some better weather you can all enjoy these swimming sites for years to come!"
