Alicia Kearns MP's snap survey on reports of Labour plans to introduce a pay-per-mile car tax revealed:
- 81% of respondents do not think motorists should be taxed based on how far they drive.
- 83% think this tax unfairly targets rural communities.
- Only 22% of respondents would reduce their car use as a result.
Also known as road pricing, this scheme would see motorists pay more Vehicle Excise Duty depending on how many miles they drive per year. This means those who drive less, pay less, and those who drive more, pay more.
Alicia Kearns, Member of Parliament for Rutland and Stamford, said:
"In Rutland we have the highest car use of any county, and in Lincolnshire and the Harborough villages we live very rural lives, so I know many of you are concerned about the impact these proposals could have.
"If this tax is introduced in the Autumn Budget, I will do all I can to fight it to ensure us in rural areas are not unfairly facing increased bills because of where we live."
