Rutland and Melton MP Alicia Kearns has welcomed the establishment of an independent Trade and Agriculture Commission (TAC) to represent farmers, retailers and consumers across the UK.
The Commission will be chaired by food safety expert and former Chief Executive of the Food Standards Agency Tim Smith and consumer groups, retailers and farming unions from across the UK have been named as members.
The Commission will report directly to the Trade Secretary, advising on trade policies the Government should adopt to secure opportunities for UK farmers, while ensuring the sector remains competitive with animal welfare and environmental standards in food production firmly upheld.
The TAC will also advise on trade policy that identifies and opens up new export opportunities for the UK agricultural industry while protecting consumer interests and those of developing countries.
