Rutland and Melton MP Alicia Kearns has recognised two new local heroes for their outstanding response to the COVID-19 pandemic; Melton’s Uzzal Miah and Oakham’s Jonathan Spencer.
Every week, Alicia celebrates at least one winner of the ‘Unsung Hero’ award, raising awareness of people doing extraordinary things locally, and bolstering community spirit amidst the pandemic. All those recognised will receive a certificate of recognition, a badge and be invited to an event once the pandemic is over as a small way to say thank you.
Jonathan Spencer began running the Orbis in Oakham in January, but since the crisis hit has been deliver 20 free meals every week to vulnerable residents in the area. He’s also been running morale boosting competitions on Facebook, with the winners receiving freshly made treats directly to their doorstep!
Melton’s Uzzal Miah runs the Spice Club restaurant and has been providing free meals to care home staff and residents alongside other healthcare keyworkers. He has also been offering local care homes the use of his drivers so they can get the necessities they need from local shops, without putting themselves at risk.
Rutland and Melton MP, Alicia Kearns, said:
“ I am immensely grateful to both Uzzal and Jonathan for their selfless and kind response to the pandemic.
“It is incredibly important that we remember how our fantastic local businesses have supported our communities at this dark time, and make the conscious choice to support them in return when our country has healed.”
The East Family who were recently recognised as Unsung Heroes are providing 300 meals to staff at Kettering Hospital every day, and their initiative can be donated to here: https://www.athene-communications.co.uk/food-4-heroes-kettering/
Alicia Kearns MP is encouraging residents who know a person or organisation that deserve recognition for their outstanding response to the pandemic to nominate them on her website at aliciakearns.com/heroes.
