Two new drugs, tocilizumab and sarilumab, have been approved to help save lives from COVID.
From today, COVID-19 patients admitted to intensive care units will receive these new life-saving treatments which can reduce the time spent in hospital by up to 10 days.
Supplies of tocilizumab are already available in hospitals across the UK and clinicians will be able to treat all those admitted to intensive care units, potentially saving hundreds of lives.
I am immensely grateful to everyone involved in this breakthrough that our British scientists have achieved new life-saving treatments which can reduce recovery time so greatly that those with the virus spend up to ten days fewer needing hospital care.
