Alicia Kearns MP has welcomed news that Melton Borough Council will receive an additional £506,677, Harborough District Council £935,008, Rutland County Council £1,105,876 and Leicestershire County Council £12,515,921 from Government to help provide essential services and ensure they have the resources they need to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is part of a £1.6 billion package being allocated to Local Authorities this month and takes the total extra financial support from for councils to £3.2 billion.
Alicia had made representations to The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and wrote to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Robert Jenrick and Local Government Minister Simon Clarke calling for more funds for local councils earlier this month.
Alicia Kearns MP said:
“Our Councils are working extraordinarily hard to support our communities. This additional funding will go a long way to ensuring they can continue to support the most vulnerable, provide additional services during the pandemic, and continue to provide essential services. This funding is a very important investment, but I stand by to secure more support for our Councils as we work together to recover from the pandemic."
Melton Borough Council leader Joe Orson said:
“I am pleased that the government has recognised the vital role districts councils are playing in leading the local response and the huge financial pressure placed upon us at this time through this increased level of funding. However, it is clear that much more will be required if we are going to be able to continue to support the local community and local businesses in the way we have without impacting on the council’s other services. I would like to thank our MP, Alicia Kearns, for her support in getting the message across to the government of the financial support that is required.”
