Today, following an inquiry requested by Alicia Kearns MP the Foreign Affairs Select Committee published its report, “Never Again: The UK’s Responsibility to Act on Atrocities in Xinjiang and Beyond”. It is a comprehensive and practical report that provides concrete steps for the UK to take to help prevent the genocide in Xinjiang.
The Foreign Affairs Committee received hundreds of written and oral submissions which shaped a series of practical and achievable recommendations for the global community to adopt in order to prevent the atrocities in Xinjiang continuing; and repeated around the world.
The report recommends 36 specific actions covering multilateral efforts, justice and sanctions mechanisms and domestic policies including the introduction of an atrocity prevention strategy under the newly created Conflict Centre which Alicia Kearns has lobbied for since her election.
Alicia Kearns, MP for Rutland and Melton, and member of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee said:
“The world has watched in horror the mass atrocities being perpetrated in Xinjiang and asked itself how to respond to and prevent a Great Power from committing a genocide against its own people.
“This inquiry, which I secured, provides for the first time a blueprint to address mass atrocities when they are committed by a Great Power. But to be successful we need Governments around the world to work together to adopt these practical mechanisms and actions to guarantee the freedoms of communities around the world.
“The UK, as one of the foremost guarantors of freedom in the world, has led the international response to the genocide in Xinjiang, and now the Foreign Affairs Committee has set out a road map to hold to account China and other Great Powers who commit mass atrocities.”
The report makes 36 recommendations for actions that that the UK Government and its partners could take to limit and end the genocide, and save lives.
