Following an agreement between Leicestershire County Council and Melton Borough Council, it has been confirmed that an agreement has been reached between Homes England and the Councils to accept Housing Infrastructure Fund money, which will allow the Southern Section of the long-awaited bypass (MMDR).
Funding for this project has been beset with problems, with the Southern Section looking to be impossible following Leicestershire County Council’s decision to reject the funding from Homes England.
Following intervention from Melton Borough Council, and a petition to save the Southern Section, a new funding arrangement was agreed, with Melton BC contributing an extra £750,000 to the project.
Alicia Kearns, MP for Rutland and Melton said:
“The confirmation that the MMDR. Will be delivered, in full, is the most amazing early Christmas present for Melton.
“I know just how hard it’s been to get this project to this stage – and I take my hat off to Cllr Joe Orson for finding common ground with the County Council.
“This road is one of the tools that will help unlock Melton’s potential – giving us not just the transport infrastructure that we deserve, but better connectivity with the East Midlands in general.
“After being talked about for so long, I’m beyond proud that Melton is finally going to get its bypass.”
