At the General Election on 4th July, Rutland, Stamford and the Stamford and Harborough Villages are moving to a new Parliamentary constituency.
I am standing as your Conservative Parliamentary Candidate, hoping to be elected to serve our wonderful communities as the Member of Parliament for our new constituency of Rutland and Stamford.
Before Parliament I worked in Counter-Terrorism at the Foreign Office, and with NATO and allied Governments. I’ve brought this experience to Parliament, where I’m fortunate to have been elected by MPs from all parties as Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee where I lead efforts to scrutinise Government foreign policy.
During my four and a half years as the MP for Rutland and Melton I’m proud my team and I have helped almost 13,000 residents, and responded to almost 30,000 requests from constituents on policy issues - that’s over 200 people a week helped or assisted with a serious problem they’re facing or a policy concern. Families go to their MP in their darkest moments, when it feels every other door has been closed to them, and it is my deepest honour to move heaven and earth to try and help people get the support they deserve.
In Parliament I have fought a number of national campaigns: successfully ending the scandal of lone births in the NHS during the pandemic, as well as securing the legal right to visit loved ones in care homes and hospitals; the creation of the COVID-19 Recovery Grant for businesses who didn’t pay business rates, a ban on hare-coursing, and increased fines for fly-tipping.
Above all, I have fought relentlessly for the communities I have the privilege of representing, including securing £23.7 million to level up Rutland and Melton, installation of safety upgrades to the A1 as Chair of the A1 MPs Working Group, creating a Rural Crime Team, and a commitment to keep Rutland Memorial Hospital open as well as securing £1.5 million of upgrades for it. I also secured the go-ahead for a new GP practice, and got diggers in the ground to finally build a 5o-year awaited bypass for Melton Mowbray.
I am hoping you will share with me your priorities, and what you want a future Member of Parliament to focus on to make our incredible communities even better places to live by completing my short survey.
Once I’ve received your responses, I’ll study all the results, keep listening when out on the doorsteps, and make a plan for how I would action and deliver on what matters most to us all if I have the honour of being elected as your MP.
Very many thanks in advance, and all my best to you and yours,
Alicia
